The illuminated New Year's Eve ball descending at midnight amidst a massive cloud of colorful confetti and cheering crowds

New Year Balldrop

The Times Square Ball Drop is a famous New Year's Eve event where a huge crystal ball drops from a 77-foot flagpole on top of One Times Square to mark the last 60 seconds of the year. The Constellation Ball, a six-ton engineering marvel that was 12.5 feet wide and covered in 5,280 circular Waterford Crystal panels, was the main attraction of the celebration for the New Year. When the clock struck midnight and the new "2026" numbers lit up, a literal ton of confetti fell on the square, and people all over the world watched the symbolic change. This year's event was especially important because it officially started America250, the 250th anniversary of the United States. The ball was lit again in red, white, and blue just four minutes after midnight, which is not something that usually happens. It will drop again this year on July 3, 2026, to start the Independence Day celebrations.
