Renee nicole good
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent shot and killed a 37-year-old mother of three named Renee Nicole Macklin Good in south Minneapolis on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The event happened during a big federal immigration raid in the city, only four blocks from where George Floyd was killed in 2020.
The Event and Different Stories
There is video of the shooting from several angles, including one that was filmed by the agent who fired the shots. The video shows agents surrounding Good's SUV on a snowy street. As she started to drive forward, an ICE agent named Jonathan Ross shot several times into the car.
The tragedy has led to a heated national debate with two very different stories:
Federal Officials: President Donald Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said that the shooting was self-defense against a "act of domestic terrorism," claiming that Good tried to run over the agents.
Minneapolis Leaders Mayor Jacob Frey and Governor Tim Walz quickly disagreed, with Frey saying that the story of self-defense was "bulls**t." They say the video shows the car moving slowly or at an angle that didn't call for deadly force.

Who was Renee Good?
Renee Good was a poet and writer who had just moved to Minneapolis from Kansas City, Missouri. Her mother, Donna Ganger, and her wife, Becca Good, say that she was a very kind and caring person who "sparkled" with life.
Background: She was born in Colorado Springs, went to Old Dominion University and won awards for her creative writing, and worked as a dental assistant before.
The "Activist" Label: Federal officials called her a "professional agitator," but her family and ex-husband said she was not a political activist. Her wife said they had stopped that morning just to "support their neighbors" with whistles, saying, "We had whistles." They had guns.
What is going on now and what is being looked into
The shooting has led to a lot of protests, vigils, and fights between the community and the police. There is a big legal problem because the FBI has reportedly told state and local agencies, like the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA), that they can't take part in the investigation. Governor Walz said this would make it "very, very difficult" to get a fair outcome.
