“Landslide at Mount Maunganui covering campground with mud and debris after heavy rain.”

Mount maunganui landslide

The terrible landslide at Mount Maunganui (Mauao) on January 22, 2026, was caused by a very strong sub-tropical weather system that dropped more than 250mm of rain on the Bay of Plenty in just 24 hours. The disaster happened when a huge, wet wedge of volcanic ash and weathered rock on the mountain's lower eastern flank lost its structural integrity. This caused thousands of tons of debris to fall into the Mount Maunganui Beachside Holiday Park. This wall of mud and rock destroyed a central bathroom block and several campsites, killing six people, including two teenagers. The event showed how weak Mauao's rhyolitic slopes are, since they can "liquidize" under a lot of hydraulic pressure. It also started a national debate about the safety of permanent buildings and campgrounds with a lot of people at the foot of active slip zones.
