Pawl

A pawl is a key mechanical part that usually looks like a lever or a wedge and lets motion through in only one direction. The pawl works by interacting with the teeth of a ratchet wheel or a notched bar. As the wheel turns in the right direction, the pawl slides up and over the curved edges of the teeth. It is usually held in place by a spring or gravity. But if the motion tries to go back, the tip of the pawl gets stuck in a notch, stopping the movement and stopping the rotation. This simple but effective mechanism is what makes the clicking sound of a socket wrench, the locking security of a heavy-duty winch, and the one-way pull of a plastic zip tie.
