Captured Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro, wearing a dark jacket and looking solemn, is escorted by armed U.S. federal agents and Delta Force personnel toward a transport aircraft during his 2026 extradition to New York.

Nicolas Maduro Arrest

The United States military carried out Operation Absolute Resolve on January 3, 2026. This was a fast and dangerous raid in Caracas that led to the capture of Nicolás Maduro, the leader of Venezuela, and his wife, Cilia Flores. President Donald Trump gave the go-ahead for the operation, which included elite special forces like Delta Force. It was backed by more than 150 planes and strategic airstrikes across northern Venezuela to take out local air defenses. Within 30 minutes, U.S. troops broke into Maduro's compound, reportedly using blowtorches to get into a fortified safe room. They then arrested the couple and flew them by helicopter to the USS Iwo Jima. Maduro was then flown to New York City, where he is now being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn while he waits for his trial on federal charges of narco-terrorism, cocaine importation conspiracy, and weapons offenses. The U.S. government says the raid was necessary to break up a "narco-state," but it has caused a lot of international debate and controversy over whether it was legal under the UN Charter's rules on national sovereignty.
